enhancing the quality of life

South Central Pennsylvania.  A diverse, healthy economy.  Low costs of living.  Good standards of living.  Fertile farmlands.  Scenic woodlands.  Strong cultural identities.  Rich, far-reaching history...

It's true.  Few regions in the country can boast so many qualities as the South Central Region of Pennsylvania!  They keep families rooted, make businesses committed plus they offer promise to new residents and industries alike.

But the South Central region of Pennsylvania has its share of challenges too.  Growing populations, sprawling development and resulting traffic congestion all threaten to undermine local assets.  Complicating matters, the region is crisscrossed by 18th century municipal  boundaries, awkward school district limits, county lines and countless disparate authorities most of which don't reflect our daily life patterns.

With so many challenges and organizational barriers, appropriate levels of communication and collaboration become nearly impossible to achieve.  Our region has not expressed its needs or assets as effectively as it should to compete.

"The challenge before us is to use our

resources more efficiently, to address

regional issues on a regional basis and to

provide structure for such efforts to be

carried out. -- Stephen R. Reed, Mayor

City of Harrisburg and Assembly Chair"
